Should You Be Using a Water-Based or Silicone-Based Primer"
Primer may seem like an unnecessary extra step but they’re actually pretty important. They help foundation go on more evenly, control oil, blur imperfections, and help makeup stay in place for hours. But how do you know if you’re using the right kind of primer" How do you know if you should be using a water-based primer or a silicone-based primer" Well, I’m going to break it down in this post.
Take a look at your favorite primer. If you see words ending in -cone,-methicone, or -siloxane in the first few ingredients then your primer is silicone-based. (You can also just Google the ingredients.) If you don’t see any of these words, then most likely your primer is water-based.
For the most part, water-based foundations work best with water-based primers and silicone-based foundations work best with silicone-based primers. If you’ve ever had your foundation sort of crumble on top of a primer, it’s most likely because your foundation is water-based and your primer is silicone-based. There are exceptions to the rule but if you’re just getting into primers I suggest you pair water-based with water based and silicone based with silicone based. Right now I’m using the Tarte clean slate primer and NARS All Day Luminous foundation, both of which are silicone based.
