Introduced in 1977, Opium symbolizes Yves Saint Laurent's fascination with the Orient and his unique understanding of a woman's hidden emotions and inexplicable passions. The composition start with coriander, plum, citruses, mandarin orange, pepper, jasmine, cloves, west indian bay and bergamot on the top. Middle notes are carnation, sandalwood, patchouli, cinnamon, orris root, peach, lily-of-the-valley and rose. Ending on the base are labdanum, tolu balsam, sandalwood, opoponax, musk, coconut, vanilla, benzoin, vetiver, incense, cedar, myrrh, castoreum and amber. Opium was almost withdrawn because of the name. A warm oriental fragrance it captured the mood of the time.
