Summer Hair Ideas : Why I Tried Balayage
The definition of BALAYAGE (noun):
1. a French word meaning to “sweep” or to “paint.” It’s a technique for highlighting hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect.
I have had dark hair, all one shade, from a box of at home hair color, for over 7 years now.
This is for a few reasons…
I am too cheap to go get it dyed at the hair salon. Hence doing it myself with all over color from a $12 box of hair color is easier on the wallet. (I know all of you hairstylists are shaking your head and rolling your eyes so hard right now!!)
My grays are popping up so often at 41, that I have to dye my roots all the friggin’ time and I don’t want to go to spend my life in the salon. I really like my dark hair, and going dark all over is much easier than going lighter at home.
Dying my hair at home is also similar to the reasoning behind why I don’t do gel nails, or SNS nails, or get eyelash extensions – they all require WAY too much maintenance outside of the home for this chick. I just don’t have the time, patience, or money for any of it.
So recently my hairstylist, Lyric of Republic Salon here in Athens (she has been cutting my signature bangs + long layers for years now) suggested Balayage to me.
