Ambre Imperial – The Mouthwatering Fragrance From Van Cleef & Arpels
I’ve quite an obsession with Amber fragrances and Amber Impérial from Van Cleef & Arpels is now at the top of the my list of favourites. It’s from the Collection Extraordinaire range which always uses the highest quality ingredients and focuses on one accord as the headline act with the other notes in supporting roles that help the main star shine.
The perfumer, Quintin Bisch, took the east as his inspiration for Ambre Impérial and set out to create a scent that’s ‘a fusion of both sweet and spicy sensations’. These two elements are perfectly balanced and makes the fragrance so delectable, wearable and addictive. I’d say it straddles the borders of being in the Oriental and Gourmand fragrance groups though I’m sure they’d be those who disagree with me about that.
The notes include bergamot, pink peppercorn, amber, tonka bean, vanilla, benzoin and woods. To my nose it has a bright start with the smallest hint of fire before it softens down to reveal its smooth, creamy and caramelesque heart. The woody base notes pulls everything together making the dry down voluminous and warm.
I find the scent to be long lasting and can still smell it on my skin the day after I’ve spritzed it. Despite its cosy and cashmere-like qualities, I wouldn’t define Amber Impérial as solely being a winter fragrance and I’ll be happily wearing it all year round.
