Since my somewhat-obsessive quest a few years ago for the perfect red lipstick, I’ve been the unofficial spokesgirl for Bobbi Brown’s Lady Ruba. I carry a tube in every bag so I can make friends and near-strangers try it on. It seriously looks good on everyone. Since then, the limited edition shade has been discontinued (there’s always ebay!) and I have returned to trying on all of the new reds that land on my doorstep. And I’m so glad I did because NARS Audacious Lipstick in Rita had me at hello.

First there’s the red on red on red packaging. Even the box is red. And that tube is heavy and luxe and a scandal unto itself. Then there’s the shade: not too pink, not too orange, and not too brown. This is the ONLY true red I’ve ever encountered. I know that’s dependent on your hair + skin tone, but I also made my blonde-hair-blue-eyed photog swipe it on and it stayed true on her, too. Finally, there’s the formula: rich and creamy with a hint of shine but pigmented enough to stay put. I usually apply, blot, then re-apply to really set it.
I’ll still be breaking out the more retro Lady Ruba come summer, but for now?and definitely for Valentine’s Day?NARS Audacious Lipstick in Rita has a special place my heart. Just look at that toothy grin! Curious what other lipsticks you’re loving right now"
