2017 Blush Trends With Vanessa Scali
“Vibrant, bold, meant-to-be-seen blush was prominent on the runways for spring and it was worn ’80s-style,” explains celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali, who paints the pretty faces of celebrities like Anna Kendrick and Christina Hendricks. “Up the cheekbones, toward the eyes, and continuing onto the lid. In some cases, color was used all over the lid, the eyebrow, or on both. But either way, it had that distinct color draping, ’80s effect.”
So, yeah, the nineties may be making a comeback when it comes to dark brown and goth pouts, but with the apples of our cheeks, it’s all about overdone color a la the eighties, as seen at Chanel’s SS 2017 runway show (image above).
Below Scali gives us application tips to pull of this trend like a pro, plus her favorite shades to try today: “In the ’80s, color was vivid and purposely placed in the hollow of the cheeks, often applied in perfectly straight lines, and accentuated with a strong highlighter on the cheekbones The result was sharp, sculpted face (think David Bowie and Debbie Harry).
While runway trends offered the same placement of color, the applications went from sheer to vivid, and, overall, everything was softer and blurred well at the edges – more wearable.
Depending on which formula you choose, you can apply with your fingers or a brush, but whether you go bold or subtle to get that ’80s look, make sure you drape the color.
